The Match Point That Changed Everything: A Coach's Story

I was about to quit tennis until this happened...

Hey Champion,

Have you ever felt like throwing your racquet in the trash and never looking back?

I did. It was early 2003, and I had just double-faulted on match point for the third tournament in a row.

But that moment led me to discover something that would transform not just my game, but the games of thousands of players after me.

Here's what happened...

Every athlete knows these sensations. But it's what happens between the ears that often determines who walks away victorious.

I was wrapping up a private lesson yesterday when one of my students asked:

"Coach Peter, why do I play amazing in practice but freeze up in tournaments?"

Instead of giving him a quick answer, I shared a story that happened on these very courts some years ago...

I was that nervous kid in my first junior tournament. Up 5-2 in the final set, I completely collapsed. Lost 7-5.

My coach pulled me aside and said:

"Tennis is 90% mental when it matters most. Let me teach you something more valuable than any forehand:

  1. Pressure is a privilege - it means you're good enough to be in the fight

  2. Focus on your breathing, not the score

  3. Play each point like it's just another practice day."

That advice transformed my game. And today, I teach it to every student who walks on my court.

Because mastering your mindset isn't just about tennis or pickleball—it's about life.
